You can do a "manual" upgrade, but I would suggest *not* using yum.
Between FC2 and FC3 some packages have been replaced by others with the
accompanying dependency change, with which I doubt yum would deal
properly. For example, fam has been replaced by gamin. I doubt yum
would remove fam, but fam and gamin can't co-exist, so yum wouldn't be
able to install gamin, either. Fonts in xorg and the whole udev thing
come to mind, as well, but I'm sure there are other examples.
OTOH, if you get the ISOs, you can figure out what packages changed,
etc., and use good, old rpm. Or you can just run the ISOs and anaconda.
