Squid is a hungry beast. If heavily used it can get stuck. If you use
squidGuard too then the effect of overload tends to be to block everything.

Check the squid cache size and how close to full it is, that in itself isn't
a problem because after a time any amount of space given to squid will
appear to be at the limit, but if you see in the logs that the hit rate for
cached pages is low, then quid has to work hard shuffling the cache finding
the least used and replacing it with the new hit.

Don't assume that larger cache is better, if your computer is low on memory
or CPU speed, then go for a relatively low cache size. So that cache
searches are faster tieing up less processor time.

Your problem could also be to do with number of allowed squid threads. Which
is still linked to your system capabilities. This is indicated very clearly
in the logs.
