Yes, it is essentially a disk partition. For example /dev/hda is
usually the handle for the entire disk. When you create a partition,
the first one for example is referenced as /dev/hda1.

Running 'fdisk -l' should show you all the partitions on the system.

Anywhere you want, although convention would be to put it under /mnt
