You might want to take a look at White Box Enterprise Linux. It's free,
and built from the same sources as RHEL. (A library in Louisiana was
facing just your quandary, and that's how WBEL came into existence - the
cost of the RHEL licenses was going to exceed the value of their
hardware!) I've never used it in a production environment - but then, I
don't have a "production environment" at my house. :) Lots of people
on the user's mailing list are doing so successfully, though.
