Have you considered software RAID. I have some old systems (pre ATA100) so I
bought some Promise ATA 100 TX2 cards ($11 ea on eBay) and did software
RAID. More info here:

A couple things to consider. The software RAID probably doesn't strain the
CPU as it's doing nothing most of the time anyhow. The software RAID is more
versatile. You can use a mix of drive sizes and utilize the space better.
