Clicks on wavs, oggs, mp3s

Hello,

I'm curious to know whether anybody has experienced 'clicks' or 'pops'
after playing either one-shot sounds, like your average desktop .wav
sound, or actual music files, say .ogg or .mp3, whilst using just about
any Gnu/Linux distro, not just RedHat.

I'm currently using FC3, and find that when either short or long sounds
are played, there is inevitably a short 'pop' or 'click' right after the
sound stops playing, and quite often, just *before* the sound begins to
play too.

I have an Audigy 2 card here, connected to a run-of-the-mill budget range
integrated 'hi-fi' amp. I've checked speaker cables, and line cables and
they all seem pretty sturdy and connected ok. I can reproduce these
annoying clicks and pops even when using headphones. These clicks seem to
occur whether I have the 'sound server' started or just while using ALSA.

I've had the same problem with Slackware 9.1 and 10.0, and if I remember
correctly, RedHat 9 too. All using the same soundcard by the way.

It seems to my ears that the soundcards' output is 'switching on' too
fast, going from zero decibels (?) to some other value and the rate this
is happening at, causes the click. I am just guessing here, and it's
probably got nothing to do with that at all.

<non-troll> This doesn't happen on other OS's I use, which seem to somehow
'crossfade' the output signal to zero when a sound file (short or long)
has finished playing, resulting in a smoother end, with no
clicks.</non-troll>

I'd love to get this sorted, or at least to find out *why* it's happening.
My Google results mention plenty of 'clicks', but always to do with mice.
:/

Anyone have any ideas ?

Thanks for your time.

Regards,

Pete.
