It is, in a limited way. It isn't any different than booting from CD 1 in
the series and choosing rescue AFAIK. I like to keep updated emergency
disks for each time I upgrade the kernel so that I can be booting into the
system I had before whatever snafu occurred. Since I use grub as the
bootloader, a problem during a kernel upgrade can render my entire
dual-booting system inaccessible and it seems to me to involve a heck of a
lot of extra work to try to repair a system from a kernel that is 3 or 4
releases behind what's already on the system. I always viewed the "boot
disk" as a nice way to get into my Linux installation in the mode I'm
accustomed to if, for whatever reason, I can't boot in from my bootloader.

Obviously this isn't a crisis, and I can, apparently, create a boot CD using
mkbootdisk with the --iso option, but I'm not quite there yet in trying to
create one. I need to more fully understand what I'm doing before taking
the plunge. My first attempt didn't have a pretty outcome and it was a lot
easier to restore the system from my image backup of the whole harddrive
than to try to figure out what to do without access to the system in any
known form. (Long story, not worth repeating. Operator error)
