Follow up:

I just did an "upgrade" from the installation disk and it did not fix it
but, when I tried it I could hear the hard disk working away.

After it all stopped again and updatedb seg faulted I had a message:
Message from syslogd@localhost at Tue Jan 4 20:55:35 2005 ...
localhost kernel: general protection fault: 0000 [1]

Don't know if this clarifies things but any help would be gratefully
accepted.
