I hope I have posted this to the correct group - if not - please tell me
which group I should use.
I have just installed FC3 on my HP t650.uk base unit. Works fine apart from
a few glitches.
Problem 1. logging into Gnome works fine - but when I log into KDE - no icon
for Computer or Home appear. When I open browser to look for devices - I get
problems (sounds of smashing glass etc!!). It seems to arise from some
conflict between mtab and fstab (on trying to look at Linux partitions in
KDE I get a smashed greenhouse and a message saying mtab has already mounted
them or something). I put the Windows partition lines into fstab myself
since the installation did not detect and mount them. Ironically, however,
these are causing fewer problems. The problems arise only with the optical
drives and the linux partitions - which is what I really need the help with.
However, the ntfs partition - though it appears in Gnome under the Computer
icon - it will not mount properly and gives a message saying the the kernal
does not support ntfs. I was under the impression that the kernal supported
reading ntfs but not writing - is this correct - and if so why wont the ntfs
partition mount? Anyway - my mtab and fstab files are below - any help with
tidying the problems up would be much appreciated.

Problem 2. The installation has correctly detected my mobo's onboard
ethernet - and in Gnome this works perfectly - setting up the internet
connection through my router, and enabling network browsing on my home
Windows network (though only if all the other machines are connected after
the FC3 box). In KDE, however, the network browser refuses to start up -
telling me that I need the Lisa Daemon installed. I can't find this on
add/remove software - where can I get it?
Problem 3. I have a problem with sound. I have system sounds - and can play
music from .wav files on the hard drive - but I cannot get any sound from
the optical drives. FC reports finding sound device nVidia Corporation
nForce3 250Gb AC'97 Audio Controller and using driver
snd-intel8x0. The optical drives play music fine in XP - so I know they are
connected OK. I have checked out all the audio controls and the volumes are
correctly set - and nothing is muted. Is it possible that the problem would
be solved by using the proprietary drivers from nVidia - or is this a
configuration problem?
Problem 4. I want to play DVD video files using Totem - but the player tells
me that I cannot play them without the necessary plugins/addons. Where can I
get these.
Problem 5. I have installed the 32 bit version of FC3 from the Linux Format
cover DVD. However, I have an AMD 64 cpu - so would like to upgrade to the
64 bit version (since I like FC3 despite these glitches - have been using
Mandrake up to now but am going to persevere with the change). I downloaded
the 4 CDs and burned them in Windows. I put disk one in the drive - but it
won't boot. Tried reburning it - but it still won't boot. Any ideas?
I should add - that I am a relative beginner with Linux. I have been using
MDK on a laptop for about 18 months - so have basic familiarity with
things - but have no skills with command line etc - so need basic
instructions please. Any help at all would be very much appreciated.
