Perhaps after performing a routine update via up2date or yum, my Fedora
system recently slowed down considerably when I started accessing the
Internet. I suspect that the problem is with ipv6. Perviously, I had
turned ipv6 off by adding this line to modprobe.conf:
alias net-pf-10 off
But suddenly this didn't seem to be enough. I was experiencing long
waits while resolving DNS names to ip addresses.
I did some research, and came up with this line, which I added to my
modprobe.conf file:
alias ipv6 off.
This appears to have resolved the problem, as it least some sites are
now responding immediately when I browse to them. (Though the net does
seem slow today....)
My questions:
1) Does anyone have any idea why I need to add this last line to
modprobe.conf? What exactly do the lines do?
2) Does someone know what is going on with ipv6? I understand the need
for it in the long term, but why is it so slow on my system? Is there a
place on the net that explains what is going on with ipv6?
Thanks
- Charlie
