Mystifying Installation Freeze Up

A couple of months ago I downloaded Fedora Core 3 and installed it on one of
the hard drives
in my computer. My machine has an Athlon 64 so I downloaded the 64 bit DVD
ISO image and
burned it on a disk.

The installation went smoothly and I got things set up and did some limited
work. Then I moved
the components of my machine into a new Antec case. I gave my Fedora hard
drive to a friend
so I decided to reinstall the OS on another drive.

When I initiated the installation I discovered that the machine would lock
up in the early stages
of booting Linux, specifically at the point where the line displayed on the
screen is

running /sbin/loader

A hard reset is required to get the machine running again.

This is the only odd behavior I have experienced since the case change. My
Windows installation
on another drive works exactly as before.

I don't have records to show the exact timing, but I think that I may have
switched DVD drives
between the first successful installation and the subsequent installation
attempts. The old DVD
unit was a Plextor, the new one is an NEC 3500A.

Wondering whether there could be an incompatibility between a disk burned on
one DVD unit
and run on another DVD unit, I went to the extent of downloading the ISO
image a second
time and burning a second disk with the new burner.

Still the same exact failure.

This seems quite odd.

Any theories about what might be happening would be appreciated.

Bob
