stall upon boot into runlevel 3

    I've just installed FC3, and need to install nvidia drivers. This
    requires that I boot without starting X, so I 'telinit 3' (the driver
    installer doesn't like runlevel 1) but during the switchover, the
    system stalls after

    Starting HAL daemon [OK]
    _ (blink,blink,blink)

    When I boot into runlevel 5, it goes off without a hitch.
    Please help!!! Thanks
