FC3 locks up at GUI logout & kernel DL/Update never completes

The hardware runs RH 9 and other OSes just fine.

FC3 locks up at GUI logout (Gnome or KDE), I read at bugzilla about a
bug fixed concerning this in later kernels but when I try to download or
run the kernel update from the RH site it gets to around 90% and hangs.
