I am "not a newbie" with SuSE and would like to compare FC3 with
SuSE 9.2 and Sarge with an old pc:
Pentium III (Katmai), 450 MHz
ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse
EIZO Monitor F35
ATI MACH64 MACH64VT
Digital DECchip 21041 [Tulip Pass 3]
QUANTUM FIREBALLlct08 26 (broken, DMA doesn't work)
128 MB ROM
So I partitoned the hd in 3x8GB für FC, SuSE and Sarge + 128MB swap
I installed FC3 with the option "linux xfs ide=nodma".
The 1st surprise was the NIC. The Digital DECchip 21041 [Tulip
Pass 3) worked fine with SuSE, but not with FC, which could be
installed neverthelesse, and the Sarge install didn't continue with
this NIC. I wonder why there are troubles with this very old card.
I decided to exchange it with a Realtek-NIC.
Does an url exist, which explains the differences between SuSE and
FC?
Does the kernel, which is included in FC3, support utf-8? What is
the default-system-character-set with FC3? Where can I change this
with FC?
Is there a similar tool like yast for FC3? I found a configuration
tool with KDE. What should I use via ssh? Ok, I could do it manually
with vi, but I would like to know, if there is a tool, which makes
it easier.
How do I update the packages? Is there also a kernel update, without
building the kernel similar to SuSE?
I would like to have XFCE as default-wm. Where can I change this?
Is there a tool to setup a nfs-client?
Any hints for the migration are appreciated.
Al
