-rw-rw-r-- 1 gferg ldp 333496 Feb 15 09:00 Modem-HOWTO
at your favorite LDP mirror. Actually a better solution is to see what
you can find - it's of no use to you if you are told that the Unobtainum
Modem is the best thing ever, and costs less than a glass of tap water,
if you can't find the darn thing. Make a list of what you can find.
External RS-232 Serial modems are generally thought to be best, while
USB Serial and PCI modems tend to have problems. Take your list, and
consult the HOWTO above (which also references Rob Clark's "winmodem"
web page although it's a bit dated), or look up each model at
groups.google.com along with the keyword "Linux".
Many so-called winmodems can be made to work (sometimes with a lot of
hair pulling) in Linux through the use of the "appropriate" driver. But
these drivers are generally specific to a distribution, and sometimes
even to a specific kernel within that distribution.
