I did a successful online update of Core1 to Core 2
but the following things don't work, seeking advice.
Sony Vaio Laptop
1. Sound card working fine but no audio CD sound.
Google says to use KMix but... no KMix anywhere that I can see.
2. Upgrade gave me a new 2.6 kernel but kept the old 2.5.x kernel.
System hangs when trying to boot up from grub with 2.6.x kernel
but works ok when booting from 2.5.x
3. Trying to find KDE or GNOME but... No Desktop Switching Tool
under Preferences - does anyone know how to do this from the command
line?
4. Wireless network card (Intel 2200) not recognized.
Instead it sees "Unknown Device" Harris 3872, which numerous
googles tells me is the right card (Harris, formerly Intersil, makes the
Prism 2.5 chipset
that the wireless card uses)
There appear to be 3 different approaches to finding a driver and firmware:
1. ipw2200 - open source firmware and driver from Intel - I tried "make pci
but get back "No Make rules" or some such.
2.ndiswrapper
3. hostapd
Which should I try?
Any advice appreciated - XP is gone from this laptop and it is
going to stay gone.
Thanks
Tak
