I had a similar issue.. the build was done on a CRT monitor, and
couldn't handle the LCD. I tried copying the Xconfig settings over from
another install - SuSE - but it was an earlier version of X so got no
joy.
In the end I resorted to editing the lines out of /etc/sysconfig/hwconf
and running kudzu, letting it pick up and question me about monitor
resolution. Don't know if that'll work for you, but it's a possible
option.
