I am running and AMD Athlon64 3500+ w/1gb RAM and 2x200gb sata drives.
FC4 x86_64 installed like a piece of cake, no problems with usb items.
Are you sure your system freezes on the usb items ? When does it freeze?
If its during booting you might get the impression that usb items are to
blame, whereas the real cause is with your graphics card...
