If Windoze is crashing then you might have a memory problem which could
also effect your Linux install. Download Memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/ and run it. Also go into the BIOS and see what
speed your memory bus is set to. You didn't say how many DIMMs you have.
If you have four double sided DIMMs then the maximum memory speed is
166MHz DDR not 200MHz DDR even if you have DDR3200 DIMMs. There should
also be an item in your BIOS called SmartFan or something like that which
allows the CPU fan to be turned off when the BIOS thinks the temperature
is below a certain threshold. Try disabling that feature so that the CPU
fan runs all the time. On my Athlon 64 X2 system that feature caused me a
lot of grief. I had symptoms exactly like yours where the install or boot
would hang at a certain place. When I turned off the SmartFan feature my
problems disappeared. On my Athlon 64 3800+ system the SmartFan feature
works fine but that's an older 130nm CPU, my A64 4400+ is a 90nm CPU, your
CPU is probably a 90nm CPU also. It's possible that the BIOSes still have
    some quirks with 90nm CPUs.

One more thing, how did you create the CD set or DVD in the first place,
don't you still have the ISOs?. If you have the ISOs then all you have to
do is check the MD5 checksum to see of the ISOs are OK. If they are then
what you need to do is burn a new CD set or DVD.
