I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 that is running Fedora Core 4. My video card
is an ATI Rage 128 Mobility. Currently, I can only run the display in 800

of higher resolutions. My goal is to run in 1024 x 768.
However, after downloading the Linux driver from Dell, and attempting to
install it, I am told that I need to upgrade my XFree86. (My machine is
running Xorg). I have gone to the XFree86.org page, and downloaded the
appropriate files. After I installed them as directed, I could no longer
get in to a GUI mode with my desktop. I have re-installed Fedora Core 4.0
three times now, and have tried different settings with the XFree86
installs........ No luck.
Then, I went to the ATI page and downloaded what I thought was the correct
driver. Come to find out, there is no real driver for the Rage line on a
laptop, (they do support other cards though).
My question is simple. I need to be in 1024 x 786 mode. I am currently
running Xorg. Can anyone tell me how to get this done?
Thanks,
Doug
It's probably just a mode line issue. I had an old Inspiron 5000 which had
a Rage 128 in it and it worked fine at 1024x768. I put FC4 on it an gave
it to my sister so I know there was no issue with Xorg supporting that
chip. I'm fairly sure the 4000 and the 5000 use the same graphics chip (I
could be wrong). FC4 has a Display configuration GUI, try running it and
selecting a screen size of 1024x768.
