I'll try the dmraid thing... But I forgot to add that I also have
another disk (hdc1) which works fine so, I wonder if it could be a
hardware failure after all...

Dunno if this is applicable not, but hey, you said "any suggestions welcome".

Some people have reported similar problems when the dmraid package was installed.
Their solution was to remove the dmraid package.
