failed to start display server several times in a short time period

i have been running red hat 9.0 for many months. over the last few
days the xserver has been acting flaky and getting worse. now i get
the message "failed to start display server several times in a short
time period..."

the fact that the problem got progressively worse suggested failing
memory, which was the case. however, since replacing the memory with a
stick that is known to be good, i continue to get the same message.

what could be causing this? how to diagnose? how to remedy?

thanks in advance.
