KDE Sound Trouble

Hello everybody.
I'm a Linux newbie, so pls forgive me for any stupid question I'm gonna pose. :)
I installed FC5 and am currently using KDE (3.5.4) as Desktop Environment but I'm having a bit of trouble with the sound system.
I must admit I don't fully understand how the Audio is managed under Linux, and any links/books you can advice to read are more than welcome.
Is arts the only sound server available under KDE right?
ALSA is only for drivers? I read somewhere about JACK, the ALSA sound server: can I eventually use it instead of arts?
To go back to the problems I've got...
- All volume levels are restored between sessions, excluded the "Capture" Input (as mentioned in KMix). This is particolarly annoying since each time I have to reset this value in order to have the Mic working (i.e. within Skype).
I tried to set its value in the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/kmixctrlrc but without any results, it gets overwritten...
Another strange problem I've got that can be somehow "related" to the sound system:
- Sometimes it happens that applications that access to audio resources suddenly stop working properly. E.g. the mic stops working under Skype and I have to close and reopen it (it is run as "artsdsp -m skype"), K
- KsCD sometimes suddenly stops playing CDs. At the moment I'm writing I run it from Terminal and it hasn't stopped yet, but I doubt that if I run KsCD from the terminal can be different than if I select Play from the autorun dialog
Any suggestion welcome!! :)
Thanks in advance guys!
Kickaha
