updateing MySQL and PHP

I'm basically Web programmer. Recently i got for myself the dedicated server with FC4. Since I don't know this Linux at all I'd like to ask for your help :)

I need to update it to MySQL 5 from MySQL 4.xx
then update PHP to PHP 5.

I know what there is yum and apt but don't know how to use it and from where download needed packages for FC4.

I don't want to loose access to FC4 when something goes wrong.
