I'm basically Web programmer. Recently i got for myself the dedicated

for your help :)
I need to update it to MySQL 5 from MySQL 4.xx
then update PHP to PHP 5.
Updating mysql doesn't look to be practical for a newbie. The last FC4
update at fedoralegacy.com is 4.1.20-1.FC4.1 from June. If you absolutely
must have mysql 5, you'll be better served by updating your old Linux
distribution to something current. FC5 came with mysql-5.0.18-2.1 which
was errata-updated to mysql-5.0.22-1.FC5.1 in June. FC6 comes with
mysql-5.0.22-2.1.
As far as php, FC4 came with php-5.0.4-10, which was updated to
5.0.4-10.5 in November 2005. There should be another update sometime
soon, as FC5 and
FC6 were both updated last month. FC5 came with php-5.1.2-5, and was
updated in October and November - currently to 5.1.6-1.2. FC6 comes with
php-5.1.6-3, updated to 5.1.6-3.1.fc6 in November.
I don't want to loose access to FC4 when something goes wrong.
I wouldn't try. I'd strongly recommend updating to FC6.
Old guy
how can i do it if i have only ssh access?
sftp the .gz file to your machine.
Upgrading of MySQL is always horrible even if you don't have a database to
protect. Uninstalling MySQL first is the better way, but even then you will
have to do a bit off manual file removal or the installer gets confused.
