Updating mysql doesn't look to be practical for a newbie. The last FC4
update at fedoralegacy.com is 4.1.20-1.FC4.1 from June. If you absolutely
must have mysql 5, you'll be better served by updating your old Linux
distribution to something current.
I don't want to loose access to FC4 when something goes wrong.
I wouldn't try. I'd strongly recommend updating to FC6.
how can i do it if i have only ssh access?
I'd recommend contacting the person who administers the box, and talk to
them about the update. As you are aware, if all you have is network access,
you'd be cut off if anything goes wrong. We update systems using network
sources all the time, but there is a real live person at the console entering
the commands.
