Linux supports 10s of thousands of processors, the top 500 supercomputers
mostly run Linux. The standard SMP kernel has a parameter for the number
of cores it supports that goes from 2-256, Fedora sets this parameter to
64 for their SMP kernels which is good enough for desktops and
workstations, which generally need 2-4 (depending on the number of cores
and if those cores support hyperthreading), as well as most medium sized
server systems.
