You might try Ubuntu 6.10 first. It's the first distro I've used that
got
my wi fi working on a SMC PC Card. (Has atheros wireless support, not
sure
of Broadcom in HP.) CentOS 4.4 may also be a good substitute for FC 2.
FC 6 would be a good substitute for FC2 ;-)
A coworker has a Dell with an Intel internal Wifi adapter that didn't work
with FC2, and he couldn't get downloaded drivers to work. It is supported
natively (if I recall correctly) under FC6.
Atheros chipsets are supported pretty well at http://MADwifi.org
There are binary downloads available for some Linux distros.
I have a DLink DWL-G630 running on Redhat AS3.
The DWL-G630 has several different chipsets, depending on the version, so
it's more important to know the chipset than the label on the outside.

I booted my IBM ThinkPad T23 (P3/1/1GHZ, 512 MB RAM, nothing spectacular)
with Ubuntu 6.10 CD and IT found my USR PC-Card wireless network adapter
also. Everything worked great.
That makes Ubuntu 6.10 capable of wireless right off the CD for both SMC
(Atheros) and USR PC cards.
I may try Fedora 6. I still use older Red Hat 7.3 on my server (PPro 200,
160 MB RAM), but I'd like to upgrade THAT also.
