newbie question

i managed to install Redhat 9 and it is working great.
the problem is a failed install of Sun Java.
trying to reinstall tells me it is already there.
how do i uninstall it to try to reinstall?
if i go to the folder, it says i am not the owner.
how do i become the owner?
i am the only one on the system
