Re: Linux, XP, Win2003 Server multi-boot

What nameless computer is this? My HP has a recovery partition, but it
shows up as D: and can be viewed. Maybe I changed the permissions on it
to
make it viewable, I don't remember.

It's an Emachine - same situation as yours - I tried all the usual Windows
Folder/Admin options I knew of and still can't view the contents. No big
deal at this point - only 5G out of 200G in that HD. This pc also has
mapped drives to several different kinds of mini SDs that are installed.
Bottom line - the HD that I'll install Linux on was dynamically given the
designation of K:

There is no fdisk any more. There is diskpart for Windows, and various
tools for Linux.

Does diskpart destroy or retain data on the disk? I read a bit about
different tools with Linux, but it seems everyone has a preference but no
real details about how/when/where to use them. Most of what is written is
so full of techniques and terminologies that only someone who is already an
experienced Linux user can understand them. That's probably what frustrates
me the most when doing this.

That's what I did. Because of a previous upgrade, I had multiple Windows
partitions on the old disk. I copied the contents of one of those to the
new disk, and then I had space on the old disk for a Linux installation.

One of the other responses to my question(s) recommended not using RH8 - but
that's the cd I have, as well as a book. I'm downloading Fedora Core 6 now
(looks like it'll take a couple days!) per someone's recommendation. While
researching it though I saw some forums with people saying it had issues.
Is the install process pretty much the same for most Linux releases? i.e. -
my RH8 book would give me enough guidance.

This is so confusing - MBR /NTLDR vs Grub vs Lilo, FAT32, VFAT vs NTFS,
diskpart vs parted vs Disk Druid, and what should be where... not for the
faint at heart. I did install the RH8 on a virtual partition once, and also
on a laptop - but can't map the virtual partition and the old laptop only
has a total of 5G (was considered a lot in it's day).

Thanks to everyone who has responded and tried to guide me - very
appreciated. I'm now more nervous than ever - sometimes better to do less
research and more 'just doing'. :)
