This is a 2 drive system - the first drive is XP. I partitioned the 2nd

this in the XP management console. Now, I'm confused again - Do both
hard drives have to be the same file system (FAT32 or NTFS) in order to
dual boot? I had heard in the past that Linux only worked on FAT32, but
some of the install instructions I've read for FC6 refer to an NTFS
partition.
Do I need to create another small partition for the Linux loader
No. As far as Linux is concerned, you have three volumes: one is NTFS,
where it can't write, one is NTFS where it can read and write, and the
empty space where you are going to install Linux.
What is "rescue" mode and what is meant by doing a "dd" of the first 512
bytes...?
Rescue mode is booting the CDROM, and at the boot prompt, you type
linux rescue
This lets you get some access to a system that won't boot normally.
sometimes, you know what you just did, and can fix it easily via a rescue
disk. This doesn't apply in the sense that I used it, since you have two
disks, and NTFS on the first drive. It is still something you should read
about in the docs, and be able to use rescue mode to recover from some
trouble that you might cause for yourself.
Hmmm...but this is what I want to do - oops - confused again. Sorry that
I am so uneducated about this. I've read so much, but it is often
instructions without an explanation on why things are being done, or it
appears that some things are left out.
Some folks like Linux boot loaders to be in control. I don't. I have had
trouble, including wiping out a Windows boot disk.
We now have very similar systems. WinXP on the boot disk with NTFS, and a
second disk with NTFS and some blank space where you want Linux.
http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm should work nicely for you.
Install Linux on the empty space of your second drive, and put the boot
loader at the beginning of the Linux partition. I used GRUB. The bootpart
page talks about using Lilo.
