Hello Group;
I hope this forum is a good place to ask. I installed CentOS 4.4
server without a GUI on a pc. I now want to take the drive and put it
in a different pc and make it a GUI desktop. How do I install a GUI
desktop off the Internet using yum or up2date? All I seem to be able
to do is upgrade the system, which I did to 4.5. My xorg.conf file is
listing the wrong hardware; kudzu will not find any new hardware. Help
with some direction please.
Thanks
doug

Install yumex,
yum -y install yumex

Then ssh in from another system that has X running on it at start
yumex. Yumex will allow you to install everything you need. If 4.5 has
pirut you could use that also.

General;
I've seen you out here a long time. Thanks for the reply. I've been
playing with Linux since slackware in 1997, but seem stymied. I'll try
this method ... soon. I'd have to use another CentOS server to ssh in
to use Yumex, and all I have are black screen non-GUI machines. I don't
think I can accomplish what you want me to do, unless of course I can
use a Windows XP machine and putty or pscp in dos mode. Doug

A Windows machine with Cygwin can do the job. If you don't already have
Cygwin installed I'd suggest that you just do a fresh install of CentOS
and this time select the desktop install + customization. Downloading and
installing Cygwin is a very slow process, doing a fresh install of CentOS
only takes 20 minutes. Someone else mentioned CentOS5.1. If you do a
fresh install you might want to consider using it instead of 4.5 unless
you have a specific need for 4.5. 5.1 has compatibility libraries so it
should be able to run everything that 4.5 does and it has a less obsolete
kernel than 4.5.
