Thanks for the suggestions so far

Quick update for all interested.......

I figured it may be the onboard NIC it doesn't like for some reason,
although being a 'dabbler'
I've tried Debian, Red Hat, Mandrake, Conectiva, Slackware and ( this
morning) Knoppix and all have connected to the internet with no problems.

All proved otherwise unsuitable for one reason or another, I need 4 basic
things from Linux

1..... Internet connection
2..... Sound, that works
3..... Access to my windows partitions, or at least the one with my MP3
collection
4..... OpenGL support for my Nvidia graphics card
( Quake 3 Arena runs much quicker on Linux :o) ) or it did on my old
PIII

Sooooooooo, I disabled the onboard NIC, installed a 3COM PCI alternative and
did a fresh
default installation ( figuring it may also be a conflicting package)

Nothing ! On boot up it says waiting for IP addresss ..............
backgrounding for now
( or very similar ) Booting into windows, the card is installed without
problems btw

Can't connect with anything, although it appears to be configured correctly
as eth0 using DHCP

SuSe 8.1 is ok I think ( hard to remember with all the different installs
I've done ) but I like the look
of 8.2 and would prefer to be using the latest KDE/Gnome/Mozilla etc
