It may be that the floppy disks you are using are poor quality and by
constantly booting from them you are waring out the sectors on the floppy
that conatin lilo. My advice try a different brand of floppy and make 2 or
more boot floppies, then if 1 fails you have a backup.

Thats not entirely true. Another OS i.e. windows could wipe lilo or grub if
it is installed in the MBR but from my experience I always install grub in
the MBR. I have a dedicated /boot partition (40M ext2) all kernels are kept
here and when I boot I have a choice of SuSe 8.1 Mandrake 9.1, RedHat 8,
Slackware 9 and Windoze ME. From my multipoint of view if I had to swap a
different boot floppy each time it would be very tedious, hence I use the
MBR.
