Then all you have to do is use that other OS to mark the linux
partition active, and up comes lilo ...

Don't know why you don't like lilo in the MBR. Except on one system (a
new 8.2 insatll that put grub in), all the pcs I've used have used
lilo in the MBR to multi-boot. My current main system has SuSE 8.2,
Win2K Server, XP, and 98, all coexisting and booted initially by lilo.
It also had debian, but I had "issues" when I upgraded SuSE ... gentoo
will probably appear soon.
