This is a great example of why starting in runlevel 5 is generally not a
good idea. IMO, anyway - many people will disagree with me on this. The
fact remains, though, that starting in runlevel 5 has much more potential
for upgrade/maintenance problems than starting in runlevel 3 ("text mode")
does.

There's no need whatsoever for that. The solution is almost as simple as the
one you hope for:

Tap Ctrl-Alt-F2 to drop to a terminal, log in as root and type:

init 3
<wait for it to finish>
   Plug in your flatpanel.
Run:
sax2

Tell sax that you want to import your existing configuration, and then
select your monitor (or a compatible one) from the list.

You can then go back to runlevel 5 with:

init 5
