KDE loads home directory icons on desktop after crash

I believe I had a KDE/Konqueror crash, which in turn crashed X, and the
whole system; I had to pull the plug but was unable to log back into KDE
(it would hang on "initializing system services"). I rebooted again, logged
into a different WM and tried running Konqueror from there. This froze the
system again.

So, after rebooting again, I just went into ~/.kde from a console and
removed Desktop-0, socket and tmp directories. Now I booted into KDE fine,
*but* desktop was now populated with icons from my ~ (home) directory
(combined with items from ~/Desktop). Thinking the setting must have been
lost, I went into the Control Center (system management/paths), but
everything was fine there.

I tried setting the Desktop path to something else, and then resetting it to
/home/[username]/Desktop. This actually cleared the desktop of ~ items and
only left icons in ~/Desktop visible. OK, I thought that's all great! Lemme
just log out... log back in... and - I get files from ~ added back on
desktop again.

To double-check that there's nothing wrong with settings in the ~/.kde I
logged out, renamed .kde to .kde.old and logged back in, forcing KDE to
create a brand new .kde directory. It did, but desktop still got populated
with items from my home directory along with items from ~/Desktop.

Has anybody experienced anything similar? Any ideas on what is going on?
