    Ok here's the setup :-

    Asus A7V8X, Athlon XP-2600+ 1G/ram, GeForce 4 running SuSE 8.2 Proffesional.

    Kernel is SuSE supplied 2.4.20.

I am trying to set this machine up for one of my users, to enable them to
be able to write/copy cds. The machine has a DVD-ROM /dev/hdc and a DVD
writer /dev/hdd. I have enabled ide-scsi emulation for both of them at boot
    time.

    so :-

    IDE dev Emulated SCSI
    /dev/hdc /dev/sr0
    /dev/hdd /dev/sr1

I found that I could access/write cds fine (using k3b) when logged in as
root but had problems when logged in as a normal user, foe example a normal
user could only see the dvd-rom in the k3b config.

Having searched on google I added the user to group wheel which allowed them
to see the dvd-writer in k3b config. I also had to change the permisssions
on /dev/sr1 to 660 to enable group disk to write to the emulated scsi
    device.

However the machine is doing some pretty strange things.

    1) Logged in as a normal, completely local user, I can erase a re-writable,
write or copy 1 cd fine. If I then attempt to erase or write another I seem
to have lost access to the drives...I have to logout then back in again to
re-gain acess to them (for writing).

    2) When logged in as a user who's home is nfs mounted more often than not
about halfway through writing the cd, the machine will lose it's connection
to the network, running /etc/init.d/network restart will bring it back and
cd writing will continue without failing, but this also suffers from the
    same problems as detailed above.

Does anyone have any clue as to what may be the problem here ?

If more information is needed, please feel free to ask (politely) :)

    Thanks.

    Phill.
