I think you've misread. Checkinstall produces packages for RPM, Debian or
Slackware, not "rpms for Debian and Slackware" as you state. Ie, on SuSE
(which uses RPM for package management), you set it to produce an RPM while
for Debian you would build a DEB and for Slackware a Slackpkg.
In short, it works fine with SuSE when set to produce an RPM.
