X Crashes; Need to remove NVidia Driver

I recently updated my kernal via online update. When I did, my Win4Lin
(allows running Windows 98 under Linux) quit working (which I should
have known was going to happen because Win4Lin requires a special
patched kernal, which the mfr, Netraverse, provides).

Anyhow, I tried to back out of the problem by reinstalling the original
kernal off my Suse 8.2 install disk. Big mistake. Now, the X server
crashes during the login. The error message I'm getting is "Screen(s)
found; but none usable".

I was going to try and remove the Nvidia drivers and reinstall the basic
XFree server setup; but I can't figure out how to do that. I am
(obviously) having to work from the command line and don't know how to
uninstall and reconfigure that way. What's the easiest way to get back
to the base kernal and x server install (w/o having to do a complete
reinstall of the system)?

Any help would be most appreciated.
