sure did, I tried so many options and combinations of options I wound up
making a matrix just to keep myself from doing repeats :)

With the work-around I finally found, I don't think it was the kernel
options that were the problem. I think it's the menu system they provide
to launch/boot the kernel on my hardware. I did a binary dump of the
menu/launcher and there's a lot of code in there that's doing pre-checks
to determine what options to pass to the kernel on start (based on my
review of the text messages in there, I did not dissassemble it to look
at the machine code). My suspicion (not a proof by any means) is that
pre-check code is somehow locking up the machine. I base that purely on
the fact I can use the 8.0 launcher and boot the 8.2 kernel and all is
well and the install works perfectly.

PS: when I say menu/launcher, I'm talking about the Suse app that
displays the options for what to do (boot harddisk, installation, etc)
that then launches the kernel
