Greetings, all.
I just successfully installed and configured VMware Workstation 4.0.2 on an
Athlon host system running SuSE 8.1 with a 2.4.21 Linux kernel. It's a
dual-boot system with Windows XP Home Edition, so I followed the
instructions on the VMware website for setting up a virtual WinXP system
using a raw disk. In WinXP I created a new hardware profile, rebooted into
it, and then in the Device Manager I disabled or uninstalled as many
devices as I could. Back in SuSE, I unmounted my Windows partition, fired
up VMware, created a new virtual machine using the physical disk, and set
it running. GRUB comes up fine, as does the Windows hardware profile
selector. However, a few seconds after switching to the graphical screen
with the logo and progress bar, I get a BSOD with the following long but
incredibly unhelpful error message:
--- A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFC8E2640,OxC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000) --- The computer then proceeds to reboot. Running in Safe Mode does not prevent this problem. Increasing the amount of memory allocated to the virtual machine does not work (my system simply grinds to a halt). Again, pretty much every device and controller that could be removed has been. Any suggestions for what to try next? Running on a virtual disk is not an option since this is a laptop with limited disk space.
