ftp setup

I have two machines running suse 8.0 pro.
machine 1 - two ethernet cards - one connected to my provider via dhcp
  and also acts as a firewall. - the other card is connected to my
internal network with a fixed ip address.
machine 2 - internal network.
I can ping machine 1 from machine two, but cannot ftp to it; via gftp
reply is 500 OOPS: cannot open config file. Can anyone point me to what
configuration file needs to be adjusted. Thanks
