When the router gives a DHCP lease to the computer it tells it all the
details it needs to know, like what address it is assigned, what the
default gateway is, what the nameservers are. Generally you will not get
the ISP assigned address, but a private address handed out by the
router's DHCP server. The router gets the ISP's assigned address and
translates all the addresses in packets as necessary (NAT). This way you
can have a bunch of computers behind a router. Not to mention the
firwalling.

When you dial up using PPP, those details are forwarded automatically
too. In the bad old days, you had to assign some of those manually, but
PPP is capable of automatic configuration.

|I see no dialog to set up cable so I assume there is none??

Many cable modems just look like an Ethernet device. Pretend you are
connected directly to the comms centre of the ISP. (Well sort of,
actually you have a little private network behind the router firewall.)
