|Yes, the router runs as a firewall, that is why I tried to connect without
|using the router. I have eth0 set at 'Automatic address setup DHCP'. I get
|the message 'failed' for eth0 when I boot. ifconfig is as follows:
|
|link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:ca:4d:s3:d8
|inet6 addr: fe80:240:caff:fe4d:a3d8/64 Scope: link
|UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
|RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:461 overruns:0 frame:0
|TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
|collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
|RX bytes:0 (0.0b) TX bytes:0 (0.0b)
|Interupt:11 Base 0x8000
Then you have to figure out how to get an address assigned by the
router. Sorry this isn't much help for debugging what's wrong, but at
least you know your goal now.
Try a google with <your router model> and linux as keywords to see if
anybody has had the same problem.
Also log into the router with the web interface if there is one and see
if there are any settings that may need attention.
If you have another NIC try it. Not because the installed one is bad, as
you have seen XP works with it, but sometimes the router has a memory of
what leases have been handed out and may think the old address is in use
or something like that.
