    :Well the bootloader is also temporary, as you can do this without
    changing the configuration files. In lilo e.g. you choose your Linux you
    want to boot and type in 3 before pressing return.

    In grub it's somehow more complicated. You also choose your entry and
    type e for edit, search the kenel line, edit this as well and append a 3
    and then tell the system to boot.

    Next time you just need to boot, to get back to runlevel 5. Sometimes
    your system will just hang if you changed your video card and booted to
    runlevel 5 (especially when using NVidia ;) ) This can also happen, when
    you change your mouse from PS/2 to USB as the keyboard won't work any
    more as XFree recognizes it as mouse and so your keyboard isn't
    recognized. Of course this is no problem when you have a remote computer
    from which to log in.
