Thanks Ralf. Worked this out last night - I didn't have time to play
much the night before I posted this - I'm doing long days at the
moment.

The key option is acpi=off - with this option specified in menu.lst,
the default 'Linux' boots fine. I'm not yet really sure what acpi is
(other than that it's an acronym for Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface, and what I can infer from that), so I'll have a bit of a
dig around.

I'd still like to understand what's going on, exactly...
