jot down all info about your system (h/w, etc) and be prepared
to answer those questions, if need be. if it were me, i'd also
jot down the horiz and vert frequency ranges for the monitor
(just in case). beyond that, you should be fine.

do some quick research about the h/w you have - that way you
can alleviate any problematic h/w BEFORE installation. for
example, you want to be sure the NIC card is supported.

what i do, before attempting an install (of say suse), i use
knoppix(.com), boot from [its] CD and check what it has
detected, h/w wise, then i jot everything down.

yes, you can do the partitioning during the install process or
you can do it before, using fdisk.

create a fat[32] partition for data sharing (so that Linux
can read/write this partition - do NOT use NTFS)

during the install, suse will detect the partition and add
it to the list of partitions to mount (in /etc/fstab), and
you should get an icon on your desktop for it
