Screen Fonts Jaggies

Disgruntled. Disappointed. Frustrated.

I have had Suse 7.3 on a HDD partion for some time. Each time the
dark-side pisses me off I boot to it to see if I like it any better than
the last time I looked at it. I usually poke around in it for a bit,
discover I haven't a clue beyond getting loaded and running. Frankly
Scarlett, I always revert back to the dark-side because I find SuSE 7.3 a
major time sink, and a pain in the ass. For starters, the screen fonts are
all jagged by comparison with the screen fonts I get when I boot to MS ME.
And I imagine I'd need a Ph.D. in Computer Science to tweak something deep
in the bowels of the kernal, then re-compile that, or some-such just to
have decent, smooth looking fonts on the SuSE side of this box, hmmm? Then
everytime I try to do an automatic update for security issues and what
not, I can never tell whether the upgrades actually took or not. I get one
error message with something about send mail or fetch or sumptin' like
that and end up just sayin' screw-it. All the press about Linux seems
kindda accurate when I read characterizations of Linux as being for
bit-swizzlers only. Only reason I'd like to get it fingered-out is because
I rather despise the dark-side, and much of the junk that runs on it. So
if I could get a pep talk and some encouragement, complete with pointers,
rather than a flamin' ass-kickin', I'd appreciate it. Thx. D.A.
