User gets bumped off

   A friend of mine has SuSE Linux 8.1 installed on his machine. After
a few hours he gets bumped off for no apparent reason. In trying to
help, I found this in the system log:

kdm[1000] Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly.
kdm[1101] pam_unix2session finished for user don, service xdm

First he's not using pam that I know of, so why this is being shown?
Next, why did the display server fail?
